Chad Phelps Puts Bad Luck Behind Him With Popular Fulton Speedway Modified Victory; Rick Miller Wins The $1,000 To Win Late Model Special
FULTON, NY – AUGUST 24, 2013 (By Dave Medler) - Whenever Chad Phelps unloads his Modified at Brewerton and Fulton Speedways, he is always a threat for a top finish or win. In the last month or so, Phelps has been quick, but unexpected mechanical gremlins would end his run.
Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway, Phelps was able to put all of that behind him as he would grab the lead early on, and then hold off a late threat from Ryan Phelps and Pat Ward for the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature win. The difference between first and third by the AMB scoring was 0.665 of a second. For Phelps, It was his second feature win in 2013.
Other winners on Burkes Do-It-Best Home Centers night were, Matt Janczuk, SUNY Canton Sportsman, Rick Miller, NAPA Late Models, James Carlson, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Alan Fink, Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk, Four Cylinder Stocks.
Chad Phelps would grab the lead at the drop of the green and open a full straightaway lead till a caution on lap 7 would wipe out the big lead he had built up.
With 10 laps complete, Phelps still led running the bottom, but instead of having a big lead, he had Dan Vauter, who ran the top of the speedway right there with him. Tim Sears Jr., Ryan Phelps and Jim Witko ran third through fifth as they fought for position.
On lap 12, a quick caution period would tighten up the field. When the green came back out, Ryan Phelps, Larry Wight and Pat Ward moved into second, third and fourth as they took off after the leader.
At the halfway point, Chad Phelps and Ryan Phelps ran nose to tail and side by side as they fought for the lead with Wight and Sears just a few cars back. One lap later, Ryan Phelps would gain a narrow lead. Chad Phelps kept fighting on the bottom as he wrestled the lead back on lap 22.
With 10 laps to go, Phelps held onto to a slim lead as Ryan Phelps, Ward, Wight and Tim Sears Jr. were still within striking distance.
As the finish approached, you could have, at points during the final laps, thrown a blanket over Chad Phelps, Ryan Phelps and Ward. At the finish, Chad Phelps was a little bit better as he never left the bottom of the speedway to grab the popular win. Ryan Phelps, Pat Ward, Tim Sears Jr. and Larry Wight rounded out the top-five.
“If something could go wrong it went wrong the last month or so,” said a relieved but happy Chad Phelps after parking his Haun Welding Supply/Upstate Tree Service/Ashley Lynn Winery/No.X/ Troyer/ in victory lane.
“We had a great car, my father and Mark and a couple other guys today they wrenched on it and made a bunch of changes. I had to work all day and went from work right to here. This is a good way to finish the night and get all that bad luck behind us. It’s good for the end of the year and go for all these big races coming up.”
“Ryan (Phelps) he was right there, I just tried to hit my marks. The car could have been better for sure. We had the best starting spot we could get,” at the front of the field. With the level of competition at Fulton no starting spot is a guarantee for a win or top-finish.
In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Joe Kline and Nick Krause would swap the lead back and forth till a wild scramble on the front straight would bring out the yellow on lap 3. Rocky Warner and Gregg Kimball would suffer the most damage ending their night.
With 5 laps complete, Krause and Kline still ran nose to tail and side by side fighting for the top-spot. Just a couple car lengths back, Brandon Ford, Jason Occhino and Jim Spano kept the leaders in sight.
Former track champion, Jeremy Pitcher would stop in turn four with heavy smoke pouring out of his car on lap 7. When the green came back out, Ford grabbed the runner-up spot bringing Spano along with him in third.
A quick yellow would wave on lap 9 for Occhino who spun in turn two. The whole race would change on the restart when it looked like Matt Janczuk who started 19th, was shot out of cannon to be scored the new leader at the halfway point.
Once out front Janczuk was the class of the field taking the win. Jim Spano, Nick Krause, Corey Barker and point leader Beth Schneider rounded out the top-five. Chris Hulsizer, Ronnie Davis III, Brandon Ford, Tony Finch II and Greg Mrzywka completed the top-ten.
What a show the NAPA Late Models put on in their Pit-Stop Convenience Stores-$1,000 to win 50 lap special. Rookie Aron Backus would lead the opening 9 laps before multi-time feature winner Rick Miller took over the lead.
A quick caution period would come out on lap 16. On the restart, AJ Kingsley used the top of the speedway to grab the narrow lead over Miller. Kingsley and Miller would put on a driving clinic running side by side, swapping the lead back and forth while never making contact.
At the halfway point, lap 25, Kingsley and Miller were racing like it was the final laps, as they were still running within feet of each other battling for the lead. Alan Fink, Brandon Ford and Dale Caswell were in a fight of their own running in third through fifth. On lap 26 working the bottom, Miller was able to retake the lead and open a couple car length advantage.
With 15 laps to go, Miller opened the biggest lead of the race, as he was about a half a straightaway ahead of Kingsley who was in a tight fight with Caswell for second and third. Ford and Fink still showed in the top-five.
On lap 38, Caswell moved into second and took off after Miller. A yellow with 4 laps to go would give Caswell and Kingsley one last shot at Miller and the big payday. Miller would get a great restart, as would Kingsley, as they ran first and second. Miller was just too strong over the remaining laps as he was first under the checkers stopping Caswell’s five straight feature win streak. AJ Kingsley, Dale Caswell, Alan Fink and Brandon Ford would round out the top-five.
Taylor Lamb would lead the early laps of the 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature till handing over the lead on a lap 6 restart to Ricky Yelle. While Yelle was leading, James Carlson was coming to the front using the bottom of the speedway. Carlson looked like a veteran and not a rookie as he was able to catch and pass Yelle on lap 11, and then drive onto his first ever feature victory. Taylor Lamb, Gary Hoppins, Ricky Yelle and Amy Holland rounded out the top-five.
In the 15 lap Mod Lite feature, Sam Usborne would lead the first 11 laps till a caution and restart that handed the lead over to Mike Mullen. Mullen’s lead didn’t last a lap as he was involved in a racing incident on the back straight. That gave Alan Fink the lead, who would stay out-front the remaining laps for the win. . Jeff Isabell Jr., Sam Usborne, Nick Graziano and Lowell Zehr rounded out the top-five.
Chuck Powelczk took the lead from race-long leader Eric Zirbel on lap 7 and then never looked back in the 15 lap Four Cylinder Stock feature. Zirbel, Skip DeGroff, Jutin Buske and Mark Johnston chased the winner across the line.
